HT Localization Presents Language for Real Life: September Morning - Welcome to our 4th Blog Season!
Segment 50 – September Morning! Welcome to our 4th Blog Season!
“September morn… Do you remember how we danced that night away?
Two lovers playing scenes from some romantic play;
September morning, still can make me feel that way…” – Neil Diamond
The lyrics of this classic song filled my head, while I soaked in the fresh morning air. Finally, the smell of September, with its 50 degrees Fahrenheit (11 degree Celsius) coolness, has fallen upon us. The hustle and bustle of school children and their roller backpacks running to catch their school bus. The vibrant feel of people shuffling to get their morning coffee on their way to work, or cajoling their pets to hurry along on their morning walk, surrounds us.
Summer has come to a close, and autumn is fast approaching, another Labor Day has unofficially closed the summer season. As we get back to routine, and reengage with colleagues and friends, we may get one or two last opportunities to reminisce about the summer holidays, sharing stories and experiences.
Where did you go? What did you do? I love exchanging the stories, travelling through the eyes and experiences of others. Some shared the usual themes: beach, mountains, cruises, theme parks, family reunions, national parks and monuments. Many others explored other cultures: France, Italy, Switzerland, England, Ireland, Canada, USA, Portugal, Greece, Belgium, Spain, Scotland, Gabon, etc.
What did we do this summer? Well, luckily for HT LOCALIZATION's clients, we were working! Don’t get me wrong, I did my fair share of travel and holiday making as well. I was on a hiatus from blogging, but I’ve got plenty of interesting “Language Translations for Real Life” stories to fill the upcoming months, which I look forward to blogging and sharing.
To kick off this new season of blogging – the fourth season (I’ve been authoring this blog for four years now – that’s longer than some TV series), I would first like to highlight a few significant 2016 summer events:
June:
Dragon Boat Festival aka Tuen Ng Festival – This has been celebrated for millennia in China. It is believed that the Dragon Boat Festivals repel evil and bring luck in the summer months. International Dragon Boat Races are found throughout Asia and in the United States and Canada. The Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races are a major event taking place during this period. International teams train and compete for this prestigious event. While Hong Kong hosts an impressive event, the festivals and competition also take place throughout other regions such as China and Japan; Canada - Vancouver, Kelowna, Ottawa, etc. - sponsored by the Canadian Dragon Boat Festival Society; Boston and New York also host spectacular Dragon Boat racing events. Look for a future Fun Fact on this Festival!
July:
Independence/National Day – While July 4th marks America’s Independence Day, several other countries celebrated their national days as well: Canada, Ghana, Rwanda, Venezuela, Algeria, Argentina, Colombia, Belgium, etc. July 14th marks France’s Bastille Day, and sadly, it was marred by a horrific tragedy in Nice, France this summer.
Heroes' Day – This is a special day, celebrated on various dates throughout the year in different countries to honor national heroes and heroines commemorating their extraordinary deeds. Zambia honors their heroes on July 4th. It is a special holiday, and I believe that we can also honor the deeds of unsung heroes such as the men and women who serve people daily such as emergency responders, firefighters, police, and in my opinion, teachers. In this modern world, heroes can be found everywhere, if you simply look.
August:
Rio 2016 Olympic Games – The world was treated to some of the best athletic competitions with over 11,000 athletes from 206 countries in the beautiful city of Rio Janeiro, Brazil. For the first time in history, refugees competed under the Olympic Flag as Independent Olympians.
Samsung’s “The Anthem” Global Rio 2016 Olympic advertisement was released. This powerful commercial strives to break down barriers of geographic borders and to unite the world by combining segments of national anthems from several countries to form one anthem brought to life by athletes and fans across the globe. This was a heartfelt piece that left viewers with an inspiring sense of world unity.
“As a demonstration of global unity, no event is more powerful than the Olympic Games. It is a chance for each of us to embrace our shared humanity and the progress that comes when the world comes together.” - Samsung Mobile. If you haven’t seen it, go check it out. This is the spirit of the Olympics.
